Preventing Porch Piracy
As the holiday season brings an increase in online shopping, the Saint John Police are advising residents that there has been a rise in thefts of unattended packages in the Saint John area. Often referred to as “porch pirates”, thieves target deliveries in plain view from the street.
Simple steps can be taken to help protect deliveries from porch piracy:
- Choose a secure delivery option; if you cannot be home, select in-store pickup or ask a trusted person to collect your package.
- Track your shipments; monitor the arrival time to ensure that you will be home.
- Request discreet placement; ask couriers to leave packages in a concealed location (i.e., behind a shrub).
- Enhance home security; having a visible security camera could deter theft and gather evidence if a theft occurs.
- Request a signature upon delivery.
If a package is missing, first contact the shipping company. If you suspect a theft has occurred, report it to police.
The Saint John Police is urging residents to call our non-emergency line at 506-648-3333 to report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online at crimenb.ca, or use the P3 Tips app.
Together a safe, secure, healthy community
